I attended his aunt's wedding that Sunday in Chilmark. His mother's spirit was strong that weekend.

I also fished (of course) and caught stripers every morning for three days straight. I met Ron Mckee on the beach one of those nights and wasn't surprised when I looked back through "The Big One" and found his name in there.

We also rented one of the Vanderhoop's vacation homes. It was a great first trip to the Vineyard. My love affair with the place has begun, and "The Big One" was a large part of it.

Thanks.

I am going to be politically incorrect and state my opinion--bluntly.

It is absolute bull....that a live bluefish would swallow ice cubes in a cooler. It is bul....that a bluefish, being jammed into a cooler headfirst would be forced to swallow an ice cube, either alive or dead. The gullets of even the largest bass and blues is a muscle, and a tight closed structure... either when the fish is alive or when dead and rigor mortis sets in.

That an experienced fisherman would state these hypotheticals as explanation for ice cubes in a fish gullet impugnes him.

Fisherman Keith Chamberlin wrote in today with a few words about the first week of his first derby:

"So 3 years ago my buddy Mark Wrabel invited me to this fishing derby ... but I nearly died from a freak allergic reaction and ended up unable to go. The next September, my wife was due with my son and decided it best to stick on the mainland.

"So this past summer I was handed a copy of 'The Big One' and read it like a kid who got his latest copy of a Superman comic in the mailbox that day ... and I was hooked.

"I showed up this September on the evening of the 2nd day of the 64th Derby having only learned how to surf cast a month before ... within 20 minutes, I landed my first striper and couldn't believe how incredible the experience was. That week I landed a dozen stripers, 3 Albies, and 1 freakin' Blue that I was told could be caught 'with a rope on a stick, they're everywhere.' No bonito, but hey, it's only my first derby.

"During my stay, I fished with some of the greats: the immortal Shultz, Ranger Rick, Mark Wrabel, Clay and his wife, Peter Slikowski, and the phenom Keith McArt.

"On the Thursday Keith's jeep broke down on the beach, I offered up the spot in my truck to get him out for stripers that night, and out for the albie run Friday AM. Mark Wrabel picked up the new starter in Vineyard Haven for him when making a run to the ferry terminal. This experience was one of the most incredible of my life ... one that I hope to relive year after year."

Hi David - I've been going to MV since 1944 and enjoyed reading your story about the guys and the derby.
I live in NJ but my heart and soul live on MV and I try to get there as often as possible.

I didn't come across any stories about Bill, but unless he was fishing the derby in 2007, I probably wouldn't have. Glad you're enjoying the book.

Hi Dave: By way of introduction, I am retired but I was in the fishing tackle business for 43 yrs first as a Mfg. Rep then as CEO of American Tackle Ltd. Maybe our paths crossed somewhere along the line. I am on page 184 of the Big One and find it very enjoyable to read. I know many of the people you have mentioned. I am sure some of the boat fishermen have used a lure called the "Hoochie"which I designed and marketed years ago. It was very popular on the Cape for stripers & blues. I am wondering if you came across any stories about an old customer of mine, Bill Nolan by name. Bill was a wagon jobber out of Norwell, Mass who fished the derby for many years. I know he spent a lot of time on the Vineyard during the derby. He also fished from a boat charter owned by Capt. Frank Sabatowski. Mostly at the Sow & Pigs off Cuttyhunk. At any rate, I enjoyed your book & hope you write more about some of the famous fishing Tournaments. I am sure there is plenty to write about.

Regards,

Joseph Meehan

I enjoyed listening to you on Marty's show. Never fished on Matha's vineyard but I'd like too after hearing your story. Once you catch a keeper stripers becomes an obsession.
