“Some guy brought his wife on their honeymoon to the derby”

by David Kinney on May 26, 2009

Ned Turslow, a director at a private equity firm in Connecticut, sent me this story recently: “I got married in Newport, R.I., and took my new wife on my 22-foot, center-console fishing boat to Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard, on Oct. 8, 2000. Family had painted the hull of the boat with Just Married and many other phrases and figures. We pulled into Edgartown late in the day and a crowd of derby fisherman began to form. The word had gotten out that some guy brought his wife on their honeymoon to the derby.

“We had no idea the derby even existed.

“To her credit, when asked why she agreed to come to the derby for our honeymoon, my wife replied, straight faced, that it was she who insisted on coming.

“There were many raucous remarks about finding a wife like that. The group was great.”

The Turslows didn’t do any fishing. Instead, they just cruised the island a bit. Which explains the addendum to Ned’s note: “PS: Still happily married.”
